Modern leadership and management theories and practices can be utilized to show a strong link between the improved result and enhanced leadership & management skills of the people. It has now been established that strong leadership with clear vision and that can inspire and mobilize people if complemented by efficient management systems can achieve better with limited physical resources that may be available. In many instances it has been found that different establishments in similar environments and with the same allocated resources perform differently. The difference in the performance is brought in primarily by the quality of leadership and management what can be collectively called as ‘soft infrastructures”

Thus, ICA-ITHD does not believe in doing the same thing and expecting different result. It employs different approach in developing leadership and management capacity of organizations. It uses Results Model as depicted below plus several other tools and techniques for helping leaders and managers to be more methodological and effective. In this way, the course is geared to develop leaders who can inspire, persuade, influence, and motivate to spearhead useful changes. A leader creates a vision for others and then directs them toward achieving that vision. The course enables the participants to be a new kind of leader equipped with facilitative leadership skills which has to be developed over time.

In Nepal the demand of proposal writers is quite high as many development projects are being carried out, both in the rural and in the urban areas, both by governmental and non-governmental organisations. 2. Training on Project Management:

The demand for project management professionals is staggering, with an average of 1.2 million projected new jobs needing to be fi lled each year for the next decade in US alone. Realising the need of trained human resources on project management issues, ICA – ITHD has started this training targeting for would be project managers required for Nepal and other countries.

The fi ve day long course covers concepts and techniques with fundamental project management skills linking the project to organizational, stakeholder, and strategic goals. The course helps in understanding work breakdown structures, PERT, CPM, task of setting realistic and achievable goals that are measureable, project costing, scheduling, staff, monitoring, and course correction. The course also includes project leadership, management and communications, scheduling and cost control, contract management principles and practice, quality control for project managers, risk management, and project management applications consulting etc.

 

3. Training on Monitoring and Evaluation/Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation:

In every project, monitoring and evaluation play an essential role. Proper monitoring during the implementation of an activity or project is essential in order to see whether the project is still on track towards the set objective and whether adaptations should be made. Monitoring can be a very powerful tool, not for improving the implementation of a project, but also as learning and empowering activity for project staff and project beneficiaries in itself. In participatory monitoring and evaluation, the beneficiaries themselves monitor and evaluate the project on the basis of indicators that they themselves design.

During this five day long course, the participants will learn about the effective ways of planning, monitoring and evaluation. They will also participate in case studies.

 

4. Training on Management Information System:

A management information system (MIS) is a system that provides information needed to manage organizations effectively. It provides information to support operations, management, and decision-making functions in an organization. The system utilizes computer systems, manual procedures, models for analysis, planning, control and decision making; and a database.

Strong and proven MIS is essential for running an organization successfully. If an organization does not have a dependable information system most of the decisions made may prove wrong because of the uncertainty created by lack of information. MIS is an evolving concept and crucial to one’s career in this information age. This course teaches how to assess information requirements and stepwise process of collecting, storing, processing, presenting and using information for making effective decisions in the organization. This knowledge is equally important in both the development and corporate sectors.

 

5. Training on SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences):

SPSS is the data analysis package of choice for people wanting to analyse quantitative data. However, most researchers find dealing with quantitative data quite daunting. Although most researchers are quite comfortable with qualitative research methods and analysis, they tend to shy away from using quantitative statistics.

However, the ability to perform quantitative data analysis is increasingly becoming an important skill and a must for researchers. The advent of computer software programs such as SPSS has enabled people to perform quantitative statistical analysis without going through in depth statistical formulae and theories. Nowadays, all one needs to know is to be able to choose the right data analysis technique in order to meet ones objectives.

Realizing the need of data analysis process in Social Science, we have also started training Course on Statistical Package for Social Science. Training is intended towards mastering SPSS operational efficiency. Two hours long class consists of both theoretical aspects of SPSS and classroom practices. Further, the knowledge and skill learned at the classroom will be supported by home assignments.

 

6. Training on Research Methodology:

A research methodology defines what the activity of research is, how to proceed, how to measure progress, and what constitutes success. The system of collecting data for research projects is known as research methodology.

The data may be collected for either theoretical or practical research for example management research may be strategically conceptualized along with operational planning methods and change management.

Some important factors in research methodology include validity of research data, ethics and the reliability of measures most of your work is finished by the time you finish the analysis of your data.

Formulating of research questions along with sampling weather probable or non probable is followed by measurement that includes surveys and scaling. This is followed by research design, which may be either experimental or quasi-experimental. The last two stages are

data analysis and finally writing the research paper, which is organised carefully into graphs and tables so that only important relevant data is shown.

 

7. Training on Report Writing:

Effective reports are critical organizational documents because they communicate information and ideas about your work, and that of your organisation and reflect and explain progress with work. It makes easier for your organisation to assess progress and plan anew. Report promotes discussion and informed decision making.

It is important to be completely clear about why you are writing your report. Knowing about how people read reports helps us to write more effective ones. To summarise, many reports do not get read because they are too long or boring. The longer your report gets the smaller the percentage of that is likely to get read. This three-day long training course on report writing equips the participants with various tools and techniques essential for effective report writing. They will also be enabled to evaluate different types of reports.

 

Training on Fundraising:

Fundraising or fund raising (also development) is the process of soliciting and gathering contributions as money or other resources, by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies. Although fundraising typically refers to efforts to gather money for non-profi t organizations, it is sometimes used to refer to the identification and solicitation of investors or other sources of capital for for-profi t enterprises. Traditionally, fundraising consisted mostly of asking for donations on the street or at people’s doors, and this is experiencing very strong growth in the form of face-to-face fundraising, but new forms of fundraising such as online fundraising have emerged in recent years, though these are often based on older methods such as grassroots fundraising.

 

Capacity Building Through Education & Training (CBET)

Teachers Training and English Language

This program is designed primarily for teachers who want to explore new theories, principles, and practices in education and in training programmes or in workshops. The course will also provide opportunities for participants to improve their train the trainer skills and competencies with a focus on transformative processes and strategies. Most importantly, participants will have the opportunity to practice their learning in a number of mini sessions or in real classrooms where they will facilitate activities with a group. They will be encouraged to act as a coach to each other in a trustful, interactive peer environment.

ICA/ITHD - Teacher Development Centre:

With the aim of promoting quality education, ICA/ITHD has established a “Teacher Development Centre” equipped with latest technology to provide quality training for newly graduates, school teachers and management staff. We are developing our center as a complete solution center for schools and educational institutions.

ICA-ITHD Teacher Development Centre is a network of facilitators and teachers trainers from Nepal which aim to

develop skilled human resource to address the need of school and colleges. Also it has in its resource pool trained teachers and administrative staff and can provide competent human recourse to schools and colleges when asked for.

ESL: English in Action

 

Course Overview:

This training course is been so designed that it flexibly provides the opportunity to improve all areas of language learning (listening, speaking, reading, writing, spelling). The course targets professionals, teachers, researchers who have week English background.

 

Objectives:

· Increase Skill and Comprehension in 1st listening, 2nd Speaking , 3rd Reading and Writing;

· Strengthen the habit of listening

· Develop both basic and profession-specific vocabulary

· Improve pronunciation

· Learn grammar mostly through listening and speaking

· Build self-confidence/empowerment

 

Strengths:

Most English programs provide more practice in visual learning than auditory learning. This program is holistic in that it provides a balance of both and so all the needs of the participants is being met throughout the course. Because English is not a phonetic language, the following 3 qualities are required: native English speaker, professional teacher, expert in phonetics and phonics.

 

Methods:

Based on Total Physical Response (TPR) method, we use balancing interactive and lecture method. The TPR method of teaching second languages is very similar to the natural process of language learning in childhood and is based on the concept that language acquisition can be accelerated using body movement. Lessons are kept alive and enjoyable.

 

 

 

Developing Professionalism in Training and Facilitation

1. Professional Career Development Training on Personal Leadership Skills:

It is a three month training course which has an aim of building capacity on leadership for personal and orgnaisational effectiveness. By participating in this course, participants will be able to apply

leadership skills to bring visible changes in their organization or in their personal life.

This course includes of two months of classroom sessions and one month of internship. The course covers most of the relevant themes and essential components that one requires for developing leadership and management skills. This in fact prepares the participants to equip with knowledge, skills and attitude to present themselves differently from ordinary folks in the market as a result it makes them a lot easier to sell them in the competitive job market- be it in corporate sectors or in I/NGOs.

Major contents of the training course are Trainers Training, Leadership and Management, Effective Communication Skills, Facilitation Skills, Civil Society in Development and Developing NGO/organizational Strategic Plan, Project Proposal Writing and Fundraising, Logical Framework Approach, Report Writing, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation, Group Dynamics, Social Inclusion and Good Governance, Gender and Development, Human Rights issues and Conflict Resolution, Appreciative Inquiry, Community Development, Organizational Development, Preparing for an exciting Job and Research in NGO sector etc.

 

TOTAL CLASS HOURS IS 100 AND THE TOTAL INTERNSHIP/RESEARCH: 100 HRS.:

The course will be organized in two shifts, i.e., morning (7 – 9) and evening (5 – 7). The participants

may attend any one of these sessions. Upon the request of the participants, the course may also be organized in the day time. Normally, on the fi rst day of each English month, the course will be started and continued for three months.

INTERNSHIP/RESEARCH WORK:

For internship, the participants may join any organization they wish or they have to go for internship to any other organization that ICA proposes. Those who would like to experience research activities may work on any one theme proposed by the participants or recommended by ICA. Those who wish to practice dissertation work will be supervised by an expert facilitator in the field.

 

2. Diploma in Training and Facilitation (Capacity Building on Training and Human Development):

This is a very intensive and highly ambitious course. It is designed for six months which has an aim of developing competent professional trainers and facilitators in various themes. It includes all the themes that ICA has practiced and promoting for the last 50 year globally. Each day, the course is conducted for 3 hours, from 4 to 7 pm. By participating in this course, participants will enhance soft-set competencies and core knowledge, skills and attitude that a professional trainer and facilitator have to demonstrate.

The course covers most of the relevant themes and vital components that one requires to be a professional trainer or facilitator in corporate sectors or in development areas. This, essentially, prepares the participants to acquire and demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitude that of a professional trainer/facilitator.

Major contents of the training course are Trainers Training, Leadership and Management, Effective

Communication Skills, Facilitation Skills, Civil Society in Development and Developing NGO/organizational Strategic Plan, Project Proposal Writing and Fundraising, Logical Framework Approach, Report Writing, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation, Group Dynamics, Social Inclusion and Good Governance, Gender and Development, Human Rights issues and Conflict Resolution, Appreciative Inquiry, Community Development, Organizational Development, Preparing for an exciting Job and Research in NGO sector etc.

 

ICA encourages all the participants of this programme to work through ICA or other organizations as a professional trainer/facilitator. During the training, the participants will fi nd enough opportunities to explore themselves and practice the transformative skills.

As a part of the training, the participants will have enough opportunity to learn from international and national trainers. They will also be encouraged to facilitate the sessions that they learn during the course. By the end of the course, they are developed as a competent trainer and facilitator.

 

3. Training of Trainers in Training and Facilitation Skills:

This is a ten day long course on “Training of Trainers in Training and Facilitation Skills” which aims to develop competent trainers and facilitators who can independently carry out training and facilitation activities in and out of the organisation. This training addresses all issues with regard to designing and delivering high quality, effective training. It is based on the training cycle, going from identifying learning needs of participants, through setting objectives, designing the training activity, implementing and finally evaluating it. It deals with different types of adult learning and different training methodologies, setting clear objectives, structuring the content of your training, giving constructive feedback to participants, group processes, etc. The second half of the training is based on Facilitation Skills course or Technology of Participation (ToP), in which different participatory methods for constructive group discussion, gathering and analyzing ideas and short and long term planning are taught in a very active and participatory way. These methods will also be used for some of the other training sessions.

 

4. Training Course on Capacity Building:

This is a seven day long course which combines five days of training and two days of field visit. This course is designed for people who have already been working as professional trainers but have not been familiar with ICA tools, technology, approaches and methods. This course aims to equip trainers and facilitators with ICA training approach practiced all over the world. During the seven days, the participants will be exposed to major facilitating tools and technologies that ICA has been promoting for decades. In the completion of the course, the interested candidates can work through

ICA for its in house trainings and in the training programmes it supports.
